Chunky Ridged Beanie

 


Materials needed:
Bulky (5) weight yarn – 110 yards in color of choice.
Suggested yarn: Lion Brand Tweed Stripes in Prism
8mm hook
Yarn needle

Adult size fits most heads. Child size fits toddler – young child.

Special stitches used:

Crochet into 3rd loop of an hdc stitch: Insert hook into the horizontal loop behind the front and back loops of the stitch.

Stitch abbreviations
MR: magic ring
St(s): stitch(es)
Sc: single crochet
Hdc: half double crochet
Inc: increase
Dec: decrease
(): repeat same stitches
FO: fasten off

Gauge: 11 sts, 8 rows = 4”

 Ch 1 at the beginning of each round does not count as a stitch. All rounds are joined with a slst to the 1st st of the round.

Adult hat
Round 1: In MR, ch 1, hdc x 9, join. (9)
Round 2: Ch 1, hdc inc x 9, join. (18)
Round 3: Ch 1, (hdc x 1, hdc inc x 1) x 9, join. (27)
Round 4: Ch 1, (hdc x 2, hdc inc x 1) x 9, join. (36)
Round 5: Ch 1, (hdc x 3, hdc inc x 1) x 9, join. (45)
Round 6: Ch 1, (hdc x 4, hdc inc x 1) x 9, join. (54)
Round 7: Ch 1, hdc x 54, join. (54)
Round 8: Ch 1, hdc x 54 in 3rd loops of round 7. (54)
Round 9-16: Repeat rounds 7 & 8. (54)
Round 17: Ch 1, hdc x 54 in 3rd loops of round 16. (54)
Round 18: Ch 1, sc x 54, join. (54)
Weave in end.

Child hat
Round 1: In MR, ch 1, hdc x 9, join. (9)
Round 2: Ch 1, hdc inc x 9, join. (18)
Round 3: Ch 1, (hdc x 1, hdc inc x 1) x 9, join (27)
Round 4: Ch 1, (hdc x 2, hdc inc x 1) x 9, join. (36)
Round 5: Ch 1, (hdc x 3, hdc inc x 1) x 9, join. (45)
Round 6-7: Ch 1, hdc x 45, join. (45)
Round 8: Ch 1, hdc x 45 in 3rd loops of round 7. (45)
Round 9-14: Repeat rounds 7 & 8. (45)
Round 15: Ch 1, hdc x 45 in 3rd loops of round 16. (45)
Round 16: Ch 1, sc x 45, join. (45)
Weave in end.

Tassels (optional)
Round 1: Start with a long tail - In MR, ch 15, starting in 2nd ch from hook, [sc x 3] x 14, slst to MR. Repeat for a total of 5 tassels.
Insert yarn ends into top of hat and tie a knot. Snip the ends inside the hat.
