Whale Ornament



 Materials needed

DK yarn – 60 yards gray, 30 yards red, 10 yards white.
Suggested yarn: Paintbox cotton dk.
2.5mm hook
6mm safety eyes
Poly-fil
Yarn needle 

Size: 2” x 3” when made with the suggested yarn and hook size.

You can also use WW yarn for a larger ornament!

MR: magic ring
Ch: chain

Sc: single crochet
Inc: increase
Dec: decrease
BLO: back loop only
FLO: front loop only
(): repeat same stitches

FO: fasten off

Body (in gray)
Stuff as you go.
Round 1: In MR, sc x 6. (6)
Round 2: Sc inc x 6. (12)
Round 3: (Sc x 1, sc inc) x 6. (18)
Round 4: (Sc x 2, sc inc) x 6. (24)
Round 5-7: Sc x 24. (24)
Round 8: Sc x 5, (sc dec, sc x 2) x 3, sc dec x 1, sc x 5. (20)
Round 9-10: Sc x 20. (20)
Round 11: Sc x 3, (sc dec, sc x 2) x 3, sc dec x 1, sc x 3. (16)
Insert safety eyes between rounds 7 & 8, 9 sts apart. The 1st eye will be placed after the 1st dec of round 8, the 2nd eye will be placed before the last dec of round 8.
Round 12: Sc x 16. (16)
Round 13: (Sc x 2, sc dec) x 4. (12)
Round 14: Sc x 12. (12)
Round 15: Sc x 1, sc dec x 1, (sc x 2, sc dec) x 2, sc x 1. (9)
Round 16: Sc dec x 1, sc x 2, sc inc x 1, sc x 2, sc dec x 1. (8)
Round 17: Sc dec x 4. (4)
FO, leaving a long tail for sewing. Whip stitch FLO and pull tight to close. Weave in end.

Front fins (Make 2 – in gray)
DO NOT STUFF
Round 1: In MR, sc x 7. (7)
Round 2: Sc inc x 7. (14)
Round 3: Fold in half and sc x 7 across both sides to close.
FO, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew to the body between rounds 9 & 10, one round under the eyes.

Rear fins (Make 2 – in gray)
Round 1: In MR, sc x 4. (4)
Round 2: (Sc x 1, sc inc) x 2. (6)
Round 3: (Sc x 2, sc inc) x 3. (9)
Round 4: (Sc x 3, sc inc) x 3. (12)
Round 5: Sc x 12. (12)
Add a small amount of stuffing to the fins.
Round 6: (Sc x 1, sc dec) x 4. (8)
Round 7: Sc dec x 4. (4)
FO, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew to the back of the body. Position the fins so they tilt up slightly.

Hat (Make 1 – in red)
Round 1: In MR, sc x 4. (4)
Round 2: (Sc x 1, sc inc) x 2. (6)
Round 3-4: Sc x 6. (6)
Round 5: (Sc x 2, sc inc) x 2. (8)
Round 6: Sc x 8. (8)
Round 7: (Sc x 3, sc inc) x 2. (10)
Round 8: Sc x 10. (10)
Round 9: (Sc x 4, sc inc) x 2. (12)
Round 10: (Sc x 1, sc inc) x 6. (18)
Round 11: (Sc x 2, sc inc) x 6. (24)
Round 12-14: Sc x 24. (24) Change color to white.
Round 15-16: Sc x 24. (24)
FO, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew to the whale’s head. Fold down the top of the hat, and sew into position of your choosing.

Ball for hat (Make 1 – in white)
Round 1: In MR, sc x 5. (5)
Round 2: Sc inc x 5. (10)
Round 3: Sc x 10. (10)
Round 4: Sc dec x 5. (5)
FO, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew to the top of the hat. I didn’t stuff the ball because it’s so small, but stuff if needed.

Cut a length of yarn, thread through the top and tie to hang the ornament.
